November is National Diabetes Awareness Month

November 1, 2018

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month and I realize that raising awareness DOES require honesty and this comes from the heart and what brings me to this message.❤️
I have been living with type 1 Diabetes for almost 10 years now.
My story leading up my diagnosis:
A broken arm after a low blood sugar blackout while running...months later, losing my eyesight (only seeing blurred colors) in the meantime dropping over 20 pounds and becoming rail thin. The blindness made me rush to a Dr. friend to get checked. After seeing a general doctor, he assumed I had type 2 diabetes and gave me a week of pills to try. A few days later, a friend called to check on me and told Donnie to go grab a ketone test from CVS. The stick showed the darkest color which meant I was in trouble and had an extreme amount of ketones in my urine. Donnie rushes me to Shands and they give me insulin and fluids. My blood sugar was over 800. And the whole time I was thinking that my marathon training was the cause for the quick weight loss and excessive thirst, hunger, fatigue and sweating...little did I know what was really causing my thinness and as you can imagine, as a health nut, I NEVER IMAGINED it could be diabetes of all things.
This month, JDRF promotes raising awareness of our incurable disease. I won't downplay what we go through and I won't forget about all my successes along the way to take control of my disease. To those of you wondering-there is NO CURE for us type 1’s as of today.
A PERSON WITH TYPE 1 DIABETES MUST TAKE INSULIN EVERY DAY OR THEY WILL DIE. NO AMOUNT OF HEALTHY EATING, EXERCISE OR CAREFULLY CONCOCTED HERBAL REMEDY WILL EVER ELIMINATE THE NEED FOR INSULIN.
I try not to hide how hard my bad days are, as well as to still have hope in spite of those hard days. People may look at me and think I have my life together but I am not perfect. I am moody some days. Some days I feel like a brain fogged space cadet. I am apathetic some days. I am mad/depressed on others. This ride has had more ups and downs that any roller coaster at any theme park that i've ever ridden and that's the truth.
Having T1D is not a cookie cutter scenario either. There is a broad spectrum that we fall under from well managed to Brittle Diabetes where some are constantly in and out of the hospital. As of today, I am still not fully managed.
Some days I may post about how we should be brave, resilient and be positively optimistic about this disease. That's not me being dishonest about how I feel but showing others to make the best of the hand we are dealt with. I do know that things could be worse. This is something I can live with and handle and for that, I am so thankful. But to say we do not struggle every single day with this monster disease would be a lie.
As we all know, with #T1D bringing in so many billions of dollars a year, there’s a lot of money to be made by keeping us sick so I just want to say THANK YOU for those TRULY working to find a cure for T1D.  I also would like to thank my hubby and my family for their endless love and understanding. You know who you are. I love you guys.

My Top 10 Ways to Stay Healthy!

July 29, 2018

My top 10 ways to stay healthy:
#1 consistency
#2 everything in moderation
#3 stay away from artificial sweeteners ✖️
#4 buy ONLY organic meats and cheeses (hormones are so bad for us and our skin) πŸ§€
#5 berries every morning as they are loaded with antioxidants and great for memory πŸ“
#6 try adding a serving of veggies with every single meal and if you don’t like the taste of veggies-πŸ‘‰πŸΌ juice them and add fruit and coconut oil πŸ₯‘
#7 make moving a priority & find things that reduce stress in your life. Do the things that make you HAPPY. It doesn't matter how it's done pick something you ENJOY! For me, tennis, home workouts, group classes, walking my Lola girl, getting on the treadmill or bike while on the phone, stand up paddle boarding and bike rides outdoors.🚴🏽‍♀️ Some of these I still can’t do without foot pain from my foot being run over a year later.πŸ˜₯
#8πŸ’¦ water water water -all day long. Don’t drink your calories!!! Most of the time you think you are hungry-you are dehydrated.
#9 eat all carbs early in the day and before workout. Limit or none in evening. πŸž
#10 limit SUGAR intake. The less you eat it, the less you crave it and the less you age.🏼 #fact

I’d love to hear yours too! Please share in comments! :-)

Friends, If you're wondering why you haven't seen much of me on here, I have been working behind the scenes with my hubby on a PASSION PROJECT of ours. Donnie's college teammate/roommate's brother was killed in Afghanistan in 2012 while serving our country. We are SO PROUD to announce that we'll be hosting a Charity Golf Classic here on the west coast of Florida at Southern Hills Plantation Club for the Brothers In Arms Foundation. (Essentially the same idea as Wounded Warriors but ALL profits go directly to helping families of wounded or fallen soldiers)
Our goal is to raise $100,000 for the Brothers In Arms Foundation in honor of Donnie's dear friend and roommate GySgt Jonathan Gifford.
The Brothers In Arms Foundation was founded in 2009 and is an all-volunteer veteran operated nonprofit organization. They “fill the gap” by providing financial and logistical support to disabled veterans, active duty, and immediate family members of Marines & FMF Navy Corpsman who have been wounded, fallen, ill or injured while serving within Marine Special Operations Community (encompassing MARSOC, Marine Force Reconnaissance Companies and Battalions).
In addition to family specific programs, we assist Special Operations Marines & Corpsman in the following ways:

* Donate/purchase airfare, food/lodging and transportation to Service Members, Veterans and family members visiting wounded or fallen Marines
*Purchase medical supplies for wounded Service Members & Veterans recovering at home
*Donate money to special projects supporting Service Members & Veterans

*Donate money to families needing assistance with relocation due to a family member in a rehabilitation hospital

*Education and Childcare financial assistance
*Home modification assistance for Service Members & Veterans disabled in the line of duty

The Charity Golf Classic at Southern Hills Plantation will celebrate those that gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Among those we will celebrate is GySgt Gifford; born in 1977, grew up in Palm Bay, FL and became a proud member of the United States Marine Corps in 1995. During his years of service, Gifford was a member of the Corps’ Force Reconnaissance community and later joined MARSOC. He completed five combat deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan. He earned the Navy Cross (posthumously), the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with combat “V”, two Bronze Star’s with “V”, and the Purple Heart. During his latest combat tour in the Badghis Province of Afghanistan, Gifford was fatally wounded 29 July 2012 during a precision raid. He is survived by his wife and their 5 sons.

If you are interested in supporting this great cause and honoring the memory of Donnie's dear friend, please message or call me to learn more or keep reading. If you'd like to participate in the golf tournament, click here.

We welcome donations for the silent auction and if you would like some ideas on the types of items and services to donate, please contact me and we can discuss a variety of options.

In a World Where You Can Be Anything, Be Kind

February 20, 2018

More than ever, I've noticed not as many people actually say hello anymore when I'm out and about. Everyone looking down and not making eye contact. But why? Life's too short! Why not be friendly?
I always try to make it a point to say hi and help those who AREN'T smiling as they are the ones that need it the most. We've all been there right? Someone going out of their way with a sweet compliment can really change your day!
When I'm out and about, If I see someone who appears to be having a bad day, I compliment them by telling them how pretty they are or how much I like their outfit, lend a helping hand, etc. If I get a smile back, then it was worth it. Also, for Wealth Wednesday, I find some way to pay it forward to others without then knowing it was me. To prove that there are still good people in this world and show them that someone cares. Everyone is facing their own internal battles within. You never know when you might restore faith into someone who has given up on life. ❤️
Think about it. Living in the present and taking time out to listen and care can even change OUR lives.
Kindness and compassion speaks volumes always. Let your words heal, not wound. Be kind and don't let pain make you hate. Do not let the bitterness in this world steal your sweetness.
